7 Signs Your AdBlue System Is Failing

2026-08-20 5 min read

Modern diesel engines use AdBlue (a urea-based fluid) in a process called Selective Catalytic Reduction, or SCR. Injected into the exhaust stream, it converts harmful NOx gases into harmless nitrogen and water vapour before they leave the tailpipe.

It is a clever system — but it depends on pumps, heaters, injectors and sensors that all live in the hot, corrosive environment of your exhaust system. When any part of that chain fails, the warnings begin.

The warning signs to watch for

  • An amber AdBlue or exhaust fluid warning light — often the first hint a sensor or pump is struggling
  • "AdBlue system fault" messages even though the tank is full
  • A countdown ("start prevented in X miles") — the ECU is preparing to immobilise the engine
  • AdBlue consumption suddenly dropping to nothing, meaning dosing has stopped
  • Repeated NOx sensor fault codes coming back after clearing
  • Longer crank times or rough running paired with emissions warnings
  • White crystalline deposits around the filler cap — a leaking or over-pressurised system

Why acting early saves money

Every one of these symptoms points at a component costing anywhere from £150 to £800+ to replace at a dealer — and on some vehicles multiple sensors fail in sequence, so the bill keeps growing.

If you are already seeing a countdown, the clock is working against you: once it expires, the engine will not restart until the system believes it is repaired.

How Tamworth Tuning resolves it

We diagnose the full SCR chain with dealer-level tooling, confirm exactly what has failed, then apply our permanent software solution — bypassing pumps, dosing units, heaters and countdown strategies directly within the ECU.
